How We Price Book Services — And Why We Don't Sell Packages

Most book service providers push you into pre-built packages. You pay for things you don't need and miss things you do. At Book Virtue Dynamics, we price every engagement individually because every manuscript is different — in length, complexity, stage, and ambition.

This page walks you through exactly how our pricing works: what drives cost, what doesn't, and how to get a precise quote for your project. No hidden fees. No upsells. No package padding.

We believe transparent pricing is a form of respect for the author's investment — both financial and creative.

Quick reference:
Our rates are calculated per 1,000 words for editorial work, per project for formatting and design, and per consultation hour for advisory services.

Average turnaround: 10–21 business days depending on scope.
Rush service: Available at 1.4× standard rate.
Revisions: One round included; additional rounds quoted separately.

Service-by-Service Pricing Guide

Each service is priced on its own. Combine only what your manuscript genuinely needs.

Service Unit Starting Rate (AUD) What Affects Final Price
Developmental Editing per 1,000 words $38 Genre complexity, structural issues, number of POVs
Copy Editing per 1,000 words $22 Manuscript cleanliness, citation density, style guide
Proofreading per 1,000 words $14 Format (print vs digital), footnote volume
Interior Formatting per project $320 Page count, illustration count, trim size
Cover Design Consultation per project $180 Genre research depth, number of concept rounds
Publishing Strategy Session per hour $95 Self-pub vs traditional, distribution complexity
Manuscript Assessment per project $280 Word count, genre, depth of written report
ISBN & Metadata Setup per title $65 Number of formats (ebook, paperback, hardcover)

All prices are GST-inclusive. Quotes are valid for 30 days. Multi-service engagements may receive a courtesy adjustment — never a forced bundle.

First-Time Author?

Start with a Manuscript Assessment. It gives you a professional evaluation of structure, voice, and market readiness — before you commit to editing. Most first-time authors save money by knowing exactly what level of editing they need upfront.

"The assessment alone saved me from ordering a full developmental edit I didn't need." — D. Hargreaves, Darwin

Self-Publishing?

You'll likely need copy editing, interior formatting, and ISBN setup at minimum. We'll quote each separately so you can phase the work across your budget timeline. No pressure to do everything at once.

"They let me do editing in March and formatting in May. No rush, no penalty." — K. Okonkwo, Alice Springs

Submitting to Agents?

A clean manuscript with strong structure matters most. Consider developmental editing for your first three chapters plus a full proofread. We can also review your query letter during a strategy session.

"My agent said the manuscript was the cleanest she'd seen from a debut writer." — R. Tan, Melbourne

"I'd worked with three other editing services before. Book Virtue Dynamics was the first to explain pricing honestly and let me choose only what I needed." — Annabel Firth, Author of Saltwater Margins
